CONTACT ME FOR AN ILLUSTRATED TALK

The journey from inspiration to manufactured game has been both a joy

and a challenge. The stories of Cornwall I found on the way, and the process of research and selection, are the subject of this absorbing  illustrated talk.

You may hear of the fishwife Mary Kelynack, the inspirational marathon walker who, at the age of 81, walked to London and hear a scrap of her   long lost polka; I may explain the Brown Willy Effect, the recipe for the paupers soup Sky Blue and Sinkers, the origins of Cornwall county in Jamaica or the wonderful story of how a stuffed parrot connects Cornwall to Poland, Australia, France and America through a shipwreck and an earthquake.

Each talk is tailored for the group that day and takes around an hour, with a short time at the end for sharing local stories or Q and A. This lecture is aimed at History Societies and W.I groups, but can be tailored for children and schools.

THE CORNISH GIRL WHO MADE A GAME ABOUT THE PLACE SHE LOVED

Merryn Threadgould was born in Redruth and bought up in Newquay. Many years later, after travelling the world, living in other countries, and working in the TV industry as a documentary maker and writer, she returned to Cornwall and now lives in Lostwithiel.

During lockdown in February 2021 she decided to create a memory game for children that was challenging and beautiful, and that told them unusual stories and facts about Cornwall in a way that they wouldn’t forget. It was not easy, at times she nearly gave up, but one phrase helped keep her on track: ‘Failure is not an option.’ The result is this wonderful game.

BLANK CARDS

27.jpg

?

There is a pair of blank cards in every box. These are for you to add your own pair of Cornish images. Perhaps you think the Towednack Cuckoo Festival has been cruelly overlooked; maybe you are a fan of fougus, or Richard Trevithick or you take a photo of a peculiarly Cornish sandcastle your children made, or you just write 'oggy'.

They're your memory cards so paint, photograph or draw away.

Top tip - make the artwork bigger than you need, and square.

Then, using photoshop or similar, render it down to 5cm sq.
Ideally you will send a picture of your picture to me at merrynthreadgould@gmail.com, including the story that goes with it,
and I will upload them on to this website.

Then we can make the Peoples Cornwall Memory Game.
